what you want sucks the time
today:

day ~7 in spring break.  second day working at Barefoot after quitting Barefoot.  it's been really nice to spend so much time on crafts, but last night i started to bog down.  today i worked and then E. and I practiced for the open mic.  we did a jazz set (jazzesque; E. played Jazz, i sang a song.  when i'm better at math, maybe i too will play jazz.)  it's always been a dream of mine.

we did Angel Eyes, which is great and bluesy and Bbm, and Kelsey, which is a nice song, and Lush Life, which is one of the best songs ever.  But it is haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard.
me, all nonchalant, "Hey E., you want to play a jazz set at the open mic this week?"
E: "we can never pull that together in time."
Me: "whatev."
E. "so, what songs do you want to do?"
Me: "long, drawn-out freakout and depression culminating in calling the whole thing off and then on again an hour before we played."
but it seemed to go over ok, and everybody said nice things.  i dressed up fancy, because that's part of the jazz-lady dream.  i definitely missed the # on "tempt me to madness."

it's nice to do things that you want to do, even if you think it sucks at the time.

today was a "closed mic," where Avery had a bunch of his favorite acts come and play, to revitalize the open mic.  Tin Cat played, and Davis from Disheveled Elephant, and Ester played some covers with Jason, and Travis played, and we revived V.C. Andrews.  we set a new record for open mic overtime (37 min after closing!) and i had a good time.

tiny, 4 value drawing of Ankarana, Madagascar.  it is complex!

tomorrow, long-overdue xmas present for my xroomate, and a show in the evening.  if extra time, maybe album art.

Lush Life is a great but hard song, I agree... I don't think I've ever been able to get the right notes in the bridge section, even when I play along on a keyboard. I hear the keyboard and my voice not matching, and think "huh? really?" Good for you for going for it! I like Angel Eyes too, but I'm not familiar with Kelsey.

And I love the picture (though I'm a little scared by it - guess I won't be going to Madagascar).

it's good to have something to aspire to. otherwise, we would get complacent and floppy.

I should dearly like to attend any shows you and/or yours are putting on. how cans I know about them in advance?

Sometimes even we don't know in advance--like last night's surprise fill-in at Barefoot. But usually we keep the calendar up to date over on MySpace, and there's also a mailing list, which I'm sure there's some way to subscribe to.

Also, my other band is playing in the Catalyst atrium on May 23! For totally free!
